Yeah, I know my northern friends are going to LOL, this is what's on our local TV stations, here in B'ham Alabama. They say we might even get up to one inch of snow in my county! The weather man says to not expect any school closings. Don't go to the grocery store and stock up on bread, cookies and Yoo-Hoo! No matter, I still got stocked up on my French Vanilla instant hot cocoa! :P The area slightly above us is expected to have 2-4 inches of snow. Now, if that happens they will have schools closed.
Now, part 2 of my entry. I reserved the Depot (one of our town's historical landmarks) for my mom and dad's 50th wedding anniversary, coming up on June 5th. I can't imagine being married for 50 years! I want to make this very special for them. My sister in law and I are going to be working very hard to plan this for them, and I'll probably ask my Aunt Ressie to help. She was a wedding planner for years. She planned my brother's wedding and my wedding, so I can't imagine doing this without her input. I'm a little nervous. I hate to say this, but I haven't thrown a party or any other social event this big since..1989 or 1990. Unless Stephen's 1st B'day party counts. I think we had about 15 people in our home for that :P Now, here is where you all come in. Ideas, please!?! My parents didn't have a nice wedding, or even a reception with a cake. I want this to be all that they deserved but didn't have 50 years ago. I cried today when I learned they didn't even have a cake! That is just too sad. Mom laughed at me and said, "All we needed was love then, and that's all we need now!" Daddy proposed on their 2nd date (after asking Papaw for her hand) Six weeks later, they were married. And everyone said they wouldn't last, Hah!
Waiting for ideas, while I sit here in and listen to the sleet hitting the window. It's getting cold. Yeah, it's gonna snow! Whoo hoo!

Well the rain is pelting my window so we're both in for it. Ideas... hmm... how about a "2nd wedding" where they renew their vows? The whole thing: limo, dress, tux, rings, first dance and a cake! [I'll keep thinking] :)
Free is right - second wedding with the works... and seven of your Mom's favorite flowers for your Mom (and for your Dad, too, if he's the flower type).
And - it's not exactly a romantic thought (especially if they're not fans of Bush), but your Congressman can arrange a pretty neat looking Presidential Greeting in honor of their wedding anniversary. Go to house.gov to find your C-man.
I knew you'd ask. Seven, because it's the perfect number - for the perfect person (for each other).
Freee-great idea and I'm working on that :) (maybe not the limo, although it'd be nice) I love the wedding dress and tux idea!
armandt-7, because it is the perfect number! Now, I would have never thought of that! Thanks. Sorry..even though it is a sweet thought, if I gave them anything with the name G W Bush on it, I'd be picking wedding cake out of my eye brows and hair for weeks :P Gee, it's almost like you know my family LOL! I'll send ya a piece of cake.
LOL
enjoy the snow!!
hmmmm. ideah's..
well, there is getting all the home movies or pictures and putting them on one tape...there is a company that does that, and then they play the edited forms they gather and play it to music that you pick...it's real tear jerker! and then there a scrapbook, where people bring in pictures of them or write a a small letter about them, and then you add it to the scrapbook.
and get a cake!! lol
and hire elvis to come and sing! lol.
babyshark-I knew you would be one of my lol'ing friends about our little snow. Oh, and didn't even stick to the ground :( Coool idea about the home movie-thing! The scrap book, the personal notes! Yeah, great stuff! A cake is on top of my list!
Hey Mia. Man do I love coming over here to see your heart at work again. Wow, i think what you are planning to do for your parents is AWESOME. As for ideas, I think the the earlier ideas you got are right on the money. Second wedding, and video montage of the earlier days spliced together with some footage of them today. How great would that be. Can't wait to see what you decide~~See ya next time
RC
RC~Thanks! I've already found someone in town that will put all of their photos, home movies, etc. with music on DVD for me! I suppose I should also buy several boxes of kleenex :) Thanks! I'll keep y'all updated. Keep the ideas coming. I'm just not a natural planner for this stuff.
Mia...I'd like to start by thanking you for the wonderfully thoughtful messages you left in my journal when Parker was sick. It was so very appreciated!
Second, I'd make sure your parents had the biggest, most beautiful cake imaginable. Maybe they could even cut it and feed each other a piece since they didn't get to do it the first time around. =)
A band would be nice. Especially if your parents enjoy dancing in each other's arms. Good luck!
LOL at the hype about 1" of snow. We can finally see the grass, well, mud up here in the north. Keep that snow down there! I think it's so sweet that you want to do something so special for their 50th.... It is truly a milestone to be celebrated. My suggestion is a HUGE cake, band/dj for dancing & maybe a little 2nd honeymoon somewhere special?
Thanks everyone SO much for all of your suggestions. Please, keep'em coming. You may e-mail me if you like..I am SO-not a good party planner.
Michelle~Yes, I huge cake :) And music from 1954, for sure! Oh, also someone suggested that I take a camcorder and let the guests leave them a little message. I thought that was cool!
Bridgette! I would LOVE to watch my parents dance!
I'm so glad that Parker is feeling better! I've enjoyed going to your journal. I've had more time in the last day or so to journal surf than I've had since Dec! My mom's doing better and I don't have to stay over there as long.
How about arranging that your parents do their wedding vows all over again? In the Philippines, that's what we do on golden anniversaries. My grandparents had theirs when I was in my teens, and all their children and grandchildren were there, serving as bridesmaids and groomsmen, flower girls, ring bearers and ushers for the wedding. Give your parents the wedding they didn't have, I think that would be lovely.
Food: Fingerfoods are great and easy. Do a combo of cold and hot foods. Try to pick things that can be made ahead of time.
Most importantly: Ask for help! You'd be amazed at how special it makes people to feel involved. And have fun. Worn out-crazy hostesses make for uncomfortable parties. Don't expect perfection! Laugh. Keep it light! :)
Aww.. what a sweet story! And definitely an event to celebrate!
Decs: Balloons are cheap & grouped together [weighted down] in corners make for beautiful no-work decorations. Go for simple tableclothes. Maybe even sheet paper? Then accent tables with round glass bowls, filled with water, floating candles inside. Sprinkle colorful metallic confetti around them, place more tea-lights along the tables. Put disp. cameras out & encourage people to take pics. Collect cams at end of night.
Planning parents wedding anniversary! sounds so sweet and touches people's heart warmly. What a nice daughter, you are!
You know when it snows here we have the snow plows and the salt trucks and all the preparations. And with the first snow there are always a lot of accidents...put it's still kind of funny to hear of schools closing with 2 to 4 inches of snow. The sunset is really beautiful. I remember my parents 50th, we had a party too. One of the things we did was have a collage of a lot of old pictures and everyone enjoyed looking at them. We had a nice cake and some simple things like finger sandw
Jan~I knew you'd be one to get a kick out of the schools closing :P Yes, I have tons of pics! I'll do that!
Jeanyu~Thanks for saying that. My parents are special & I want to make it special!
Slo~disp. cameras! who'da thought it! great idea!
Bridgette~I'd love to have live music! Wonder if Trish is "freee" that day? :P
Thanks so much y'all! I'm feeling better about it now
RC! Glad to have you here! I didn't see your comment earlier :) I will keep updates on the event in my journal. My journal is like a calendar to me. I can always look back and confirm what's going on :)
I know just how you feel. I live in Dallas and snow is a rare event. When it hits, you have to rush out & do all those 'snow' things that Northerners take for granted,.. building snowmen, maybe sledding if you find a hill, making snow angels. Southerners go thru this mad dash to enjoy it while it lasts! ~Holly
