Once upon a time, I wanted a place in the country, with horses. We do live in the country, but these horses belong to our neighbors. Every day when I leave the house, and come back, I slow down and admire these beautiful creatures, and in return, they stare back at me. I really dont know a lot about horses. In fact, Ive been a little afraid of them since I was a little girl. I had a cousin who was in the rodeo. He had horses, and he used to ride his most kid-friendly horse to our house (that was way back in the day our town had a population of about 1,000 people. Now, its 24,000) I used to love to ride that horse. My cousins name was Edward; he was killed when I was about 10. He died doing what he loved, although it was dangerous. He was riding a bull in the rodeo. He was thrown from the bull and trampled, then was pierced in the chest by the bulls horns. I remember Edward stopped me from walking behind a horse one day, telling me to never walk within kicking distance behind a horse. I was shocked and said, what? You mean, a horse would kick me? Hurt me? So, having an innate fear of, well everything, I avoided horses all together, except from a distance. Until a few years ago when Stephens dad talked me into letting Stephen ride a horse, while the guide walked beside them. All of a sudden, I remembered that feeling of being on Edwards horse, and stroking its mane, petting him, feeding him apples. My fear of horses began to slip away when I saw how gentle this horse was with Stephen. I was afraid to let him ride a horse bc I thought the horse would scare too easy. It was amazing to watch. We have a special equestrian ranch outside of town. I want to enroll Stephen for riding. It does wonders for those with CP. It helps balance control, and a number of other things. But what amazes me, is how calming it is for Stephen. He loves horses. Sometimes he and his dad walk down to the pasture and feed these horses. Today, we stopped the truck when we saw them, and they began walking to the fence. I had my camera and wanted to get a few pics. Turned out to be very calming for me. Ive been stressed lately, worried about mama. The horses came straight to me like they were saying, finally, you are not just looking at us. You came for a visit! I didnt reach out to pet them, they reached out to me! The fear has been broken. I could have stayed for hours.

Animals can sometimes be a fountain of wisdom. These trusting horses are telling you there is nothing to fear but fear itself. Sometimes we just need to let go of our fears and take chances, for which the rewards can be priceless. Wonderful pics, Mia. I'm sure Stephen loved it, too.
That is so wise of you to enroll Stephen. Then you too will be able to be around the horses you love. The pictures are beautiful. We have a small horse ranch nearby here too and last summer I took my nephew (4 years old) and he had a wonderful time. The horses there were so gentle.
Mia - I loved this entry from top to bottom. You are a natural born tackler of problems solved! Our love Kate
Beautiful entry Mia. Horses are spiritual creatures [as we all are - but they are very connected to their spirituality] - I'm sad/shocked to hear about your cousin. I had a slight fear of horses for a long time too. When my mom was a teen, she was kicked in the knee two different times by a horse...caused her problems all her life. We grew up with horses on our street. I didn't visit much because of that. Later in life, I had a similar experience - a love-bond with horses.
THis was so sweet and poignant Mia. I understand that fear too,
but it amazes me how most children don't have it around horses.
Dallis LOVES horses and wants one too.
Love you, Penny
ps, hugs and kisses for Stephen please, lol!
What a nice experience you had with these horses. I think animals know when we need them.
{{{{{Mia}}}}} I pass some beautiful horses on my way to work. They are magnificant animals. I haven't been close enough to horses to be afraid of them. Ikenna has ridden once it was awesome to watch that. I love these photos.
Wow... what a beautiful entry, Mia. Through and through. I remember too what it was like to be a child on a horse. Our mother had a friend who would take us out to her friend's ranch and we would ride their horses. There were other children there who would teach us how to climb onto the horse and ride it across their little pasture. Horses are gentle, intelligent creatures... every little girl wants a horse, I think.
I love the pictures! And I love you! Thanks so much for sharing!
ahhhhh. I so love horses too. My best friend had a horse and when I stayed with her for 9 days one summer, we rode her horse all day. Wonderful memories. your entry brought it all back to me, and I LOVE those pictures! how they all melt into eachother...great. :)
I've always been a little afraid of horses myself. But those pictures...my goodness! You've made me want to go out and ride a horse today, Mia! LOL And I'm so glad Stephen like them. How fun for him!
