It was about this time of year, 50 years ago. Not quite a year after the Korean War ended. A young man was visiting his parents who urged him to attend a revival at a small country church nearby. Not really wanting to go, he went anyway because he wanted to spend time with his parents. The two or three years previous had been difficult for him. Im not really sure of all the details, but he did say there were times he didnt think hed ever float down the Old Cahaba River in a raft again. Go fishing and hunting with his daddy again, or smell the fragrance of cornbread, coming from his mamas kitchen again. In the spring of 1954, the words life, and freedom had a more meaningful definition to my daddy.
As his mama asked, he went to the small church that evening to hear the evangelist preach. She failed to tell him that the preachers beautiful daughter was going to be there, playing the piano and singing with her sisters.
What did Papaw preach about that night? I asked daddy. Um, I cant remember for sure he answered. But your mama sang, Amazing Grace. J
Two weeks later, my daddy asked Papaw for Mamas hand in marriage. They were married the following June after dating for only six short weeks. Everyone said that it wouldnt last because they rushed into marriage. June 5th will be the celebration of their 50th anniversary. Just the other day, I caught them smooching in the garden. J Ahhh, young love and spring is in the air!

Oh Mia, this was beatiful. How beautiful your parents are!!! Mia, I know I say it most every time I come over here, but your journal always serves up some love. I always feel like I've just been given a big old cyber hug!!! I don't have stories like this to tell myself but it has never stopped me from loving hearing about them or seeking them as an example to me of what love looks like. So thank you for sharing. (((((YOU+STEPHEN))))) I see you were listening to Nancy Wilson one of my all time faves. :-) See ya later,~RC~
This a sweet story. It reminds me of my hubby and I. We had only been dating a few months when we were married. And we heard through the grapevine, that some of his friends had said, we give their marriage a year! Well, we have proven them and anyone else that had doubt about us, and our love for one another, we celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary in February. And I love the pictures, my aunt, and uncle were a nice looking young couple :)
Uncle Mack looks the same! And Aunt Ruth is still getting all dressed up! They haven't changed to me.
AHHHH! so sweet!
truly one of God's miracle's. :)
the pictures are lovely!! I love old pictures.
my husband and I were just like this....we met and two weeks later he proposed to me. and everyone said we wouldn't make it. It's been 17 years, and were still together. :) We didn't meet at a revival though....he cought me walking across the cafeteria to get to band class...I was late...the cafeteria was empty. Except for him and his best friend who were sitting at a table discussing life, and yes...not in class. I didn't notice him, because I was in a hurry. But, he noticed me. :) and the rest, as they say...is history.
Great Entry!

Best wishes as your eyeballs bug out with all the new places to tour after this week!
jamcs-Thank you :) I think they were/are a very cute couple myself
Lori-Seems to me, those are the relationships that really do stand the test of time. I read your journal entry about your Passover seder. I loved the photos as well as the story. I know you'll be happy when tomorrow comes and you get your new choppers! I'm sure it's been a trying time, not being able to eat the foods that you love. I had oral surgery years ago and it was torture for me. Let me know if you try the roast. Happy dining :)
RC-I AM sending you a big cyber hug! I enjoy your journal too. Your writing style is like medicine for my soul. I can't wait to visit again. I'm getting behind this week...
Bev-You and Joe have always had the kind of marriage that most of us only dream of... The two of you, always make me want to try harder to achieve just a portion of what you have together :)
Sonya-Yeah, to me they still look the same too! I am NOT aging as gracefully as they have. Must be because they are Soooo in love :P
Sharkey-Oh..I finally hear the story of how you and irun met. I wasn't aware that y'all were high school sweethearts! How awesome! I just love the way, after 17 years, the two of you are still madly in love ::sigh:: I'm such a romantic :)
merelyp-Thanks for the invite! I'm on my way! :)

And what a handsome couple they were!
Awwwww... what an amazing love story!! That makes me warm all over. No wonder you're such a well-adjusted and beautiful person. You grew up surrounded by love. Happy Anniversary to your parents! 50 years! Incredible! Inspiring! :)
P.S. Your dad was a hottie!! Wooot!! tehehehe... And you look like your momma! BEAUTIFUL!!
WoWee! It's been a loooong time (so it seems) since I've checked in. Thanks everyone for the nice comments about my parents. I'll be sure to tell them all the nice things y'all said. :)
SloMo-I remember when I was little, my friends and I would look through the photo album and the girls went nuts over my daddy's pictures. In the one on the left up there, he had just inlisted in the Army and still had his pretty wavy hair. That is my favorite picture of him. And, my mom and I really do favor, especially in the fact, she was wearing makeup! (lol) Her father was strict and wouldn't let her wear makeup, so when she got married, she went all out for the things that she felt she'd missed there.
Thanks again everyone!
How sweet! I love when people find true love like that! Warms your heart to know that its still out there!!
